Your References Matter: Preparing those who speak for you.

This article, Part 2 of a two-part series, is written for candidates, and takes a professional, ethical, and advisory approach to reinforce the trust and responsibility that sit at the heart of choosing the right referee.

In education, a referee’s insight doesn’t just confirm competence, it helps shape a school’s culture, protect its community, and uphold child-safe values. At ANZUK Executive, we treat this responsibility as a critical part of our role in the education sector. Our team works closely with candidates and referees to ensure the process is professional, transparent, and grounded in evidence. We guide candidates in approaching their referees appropriately and manage each reference conversation with care, capturing nuanced, authentic feedback that reflects both strengths and areas for growth. Every reference is verified, confidential, and reported accurately to potential employers as part of our rigorous, ethical recruitment practice.

1. Why Referees Matter

  • Reference checks are a critical final step confirming professional credibility and cultural fit.
  • Strong references often reinforce (or rescue) a hiring decision.
  • Poor referee preparation can undermine even outstanding interviews.

2. Selecting the Right Referees

When considering who to ask to be your referee, include a mix of educational roles: e.g. a current principal, deputy principal, or curriculum leader who can speak to leadership in the specific role you are applying for.

  • Relevance over seniority: choose those who have directly observed your work.
  • Recency: someone who can speak to your current professional practice.
  • Balance: a mix of line manager, peer, or stakeholder.
  • Alignment: match referees to the role’s competencies (e.g., pedagogy, governance, wellbeing leadership).

Avoid family, close friends, or someone with limited first-hand experience.

3. When It’s Your Current Line Manager

  • Acknowledge the sensitivity; it’s common in leadership applications.
  • Strategies: Nominate previous supervisors first if confidentiality is needed. Let your recruiter know early so they can manage timing. When ready, frame the conversation as professional growth: “I’m exploring future opportunities and would value your support as a referee if you’re comfortable.”

4. Preparing and Briefing Your Referees

  • Always ask permission before listing anyone.
  • Provide: Your updated CV. The role description or candidate pack. A short summary of your focus areas and achievements that align with the role.
  • Offer context: how would you like them to highlight your leadership, collaboration, or impact. Share context from your current school improvement goals, curriculum leadership, or strategic initiatives, so referees can connect their examples to education impact.

5. During the Process

  • Communicate timelines; let them know when to expect contact.
  • Ensure phone numbers and email addresses are correct.
  • Be mindful of time zones or school breaks for education roles.

6. After the Reference

  • Thank them personally, a short note or call matters.
  • Update them on the outcome; they often appreciate closure.
  • Maintain the relationship for future opportunities.

At ANZUK Executive, we take the reference process seriously. Every referee conversation forms a vital part of our commitment to ethical, child-safe and values-aligned recruitment. Our reference checks are conducted with professionalism, confidentiality, and care, exploring a candidate’s impact, leadership approach, and alignment with a school’s culture and strategic direction. We approach each conversation as a professional dialogue, not a checklist, ensuring that every appointment decision is informed by authentic insight and evidence. This rigour is one of the ways we uphold trust across the education sector and help schools appoint leaders who will make a meaningful and lasting difference.
